OAKLAND, CA (AP) – Luis Castillo was hunted in the fifth round with rival Seattle Mariners taking only one hit, losing 4-1 to Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

Carlos Santana’s infield single in the second inning was all the Mariners could put together in the table against JP Sears (6-2) and the four replacement teams.

Seattle left half behind Tampa Bay, finishing third and last with AL wild cards.

The Mariners have the magic number 11 to reach the playoffs for the first time since their 116 season wins in 2001. However, Seattle struggled again to beat Oakland’s last A-spot, where the Mariners lost two of three at the August 19-21 Coliseum.

Castillo (7-6) is 3-2 in nine starts since being picked up from Cincinnati on the settlement date. He matched his shortest appearance of the season in 4 2/3 innings.
