For the seventh year in a row, Wanda Dench and Jamal Hinton are reunited for Thanksgiving. It’s a Christmas tradition shared by two families, but the world has been part of it since the beginning.

If you haven’t heard of Denchu and Hinton before, you’ve missed out on a Christmas tale that sounds like the plot of a movie. Actually Netflix announced last year they develop the story in the film.

It all started in 2016 when Dench and Hinton first connected – by chance – via text.

Dench thought she was texting her grandson about Thanksgiving plans, but she accidentally texted a complete stranger, Hinton. He didn’t act like an outsider though, he jokingly asked if he could still join the holiday even though Dench wasn’t his grandmother. And Dench assured him she would have a plate for him.

Hinton took a screenshot with scrambled text and it went viral. This Thanksgiving, he drove from Tempe, Arizona, to Mesa to celebrate with Dench and her family.

He was just a teenager then, but now he’s 22 and has been sharing his Thanksgiving plans every year since. And every year this story goes viral. Hinton, 65, and Dench even added Hinton’s girlfriend Mikaela to their guest list.

But in 2020, Hinton shared some sad news. Dench’s husband, Lonnie, died of COVID-19. This year, they still met for the holidays, in a modest group in honor of Lonnie.

Hinton now has a large following on social media, with 142,000 followers on Instagram. But he kept fans of the tradition waiting on Tuesday night when he finally revealed that he and Dench were playing together for the seventh year in a row.

“To answer all your questions, yes, Thanksgiving 7 is scheduled! See you on Thursday!” he wrote, sharing a photo of him and Dench.

While their annual meeting gets the most attention, Dench and Hinton meet on other days as well. In fact, he accompanied her when she got her first tattoo in September.

She explained the choice of tattoo in the tweet: “I have three shooting stars. Each represents my Guardian Angels in Heaven – my husband who stands for honesty, my courageous mother and my father who stood for unconditional love.”

Hinton said he had a great time.

“Go congratulate Wanda on her FIRST TATTOO!! We had a great time with her!”
