State of San Jose vs. West Michigan
Documentation: SJSU (1-1, 0-0 Mountain West); Western Michigan (1-2, 1-0 Central American)
Beginning: 19:30, CEFCU Stadium
TV: CBS sports network
Radio: KTRB (860 a.m.)
History of the series: The Spartans lost their only match between schools 23: 3 last season in Kalamazoo.
Plots: Last season’s defeat to the Broncos was especially painful, as quarterback Nick Starkel, who brought the Spartans down to 2-1, got injured during the game, significantly changing the SJSU season’s trajectory. Starkel missed the next five games and wasn’t 100 percent when he came back. SJSU ended the season losing six of the last nine games, starting with Western Michigan. … Both major programs culminate in encouraging demonstrations against the Power Five teams. The Spartans led Auburn in losing 24-16 two weeks ago; Western Michigan overtook Pittsburgh 24th on a fourth-quarter touchdown at a loss of 34-13 last week. … SJSU should be a bit fresher than the Broncos – The Spartans are leaving. The Broncos opened their season at Michigan State and won their MAC debut at Ball State ahead of the Pitt game. … Spartans will wear a specially designed City of San Jose jersey to the match. T-shirts and helmets are black with silver (with a bit of blue) trim. … The state of San Jose opens with a conference spectacle next weekend in Wyoming.

Match to watch: San Jose State vs Western Michigan Defense: quarterback Chevan Cordeiro was the biggest threat in the game led by SJSU, which gained 103 yards in two games (only Colorado State and Boston College have on average fewer rushing yards per game among FBS teams). Spartans only have 48 quick tries if you take back 10 times Cordeiro was fired, so this should be a better indicator of how far the young SJSU and defender line are overlapping. Kairee Robinson is the top Spartan player with 59 yards on 21 passing. The Broncos allow 197 rushing yards per game. The SJSU defense could have their hands full trying to stop the game: Western Michigan’s Sean Tyler pounced on 1,150 yards last season and averaged over six yards into the lead in his career. He had a touchdown 75 yards against Ball State.
Statistics that matter: The Spartans are one of the five FBS teams without a loss this season. They have four interceptions and one point retrieve. For the first time in this age, SJSU went through the first two games without a spin. … Cordeiro, transfer from Hawaii, passed 514 yards and was responsible for three out of four Spartan touchdowns – throwing one and racing for two more. … The Broncos have their first year as quarterback, Jack Salopek. He completed 53.6 percent of his 522-yard attempts and touchdowns, but made four steals. … Safety Tre Jenkins and linebacker Kyle Harmon lead the team 15 times in the first two games. Jenkins has 13 solo duels. … Harmon has moved up to sixth place in school history with 356 times in his career. … The Spartans have played against MAC opponents eight times, going 3-5, and all SJSU victories fell in bowl games. The Spartans defeated Miami University in the 1986 California Bowl, Central Michigan in the 1990 California Raisin Bowl and Bowling Green in the 2012 Military Bowl.
