SANTA CLARA – Every student of 49ers tradition and history knows that the last time the franchise won the Super Bowl it had a lot to do with a free agent star search which included transfers from Deion Sanders, Ken Norton Jr., Rickey Jackson, Richard Dent and Gary Plummer enter the 1994 season.
The 49ers spared no expense in their quest to beat the Dallas Cowboys and pulled off all of these transfers in their first year of salary cut.
The season swap for Christian McCaffrey brought with it a similar ‘go for it’ mentality that CEO John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan brought to players as an explanation for the takeover.
Could the Odell Beckham Jr. broadband receiver be next?
Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer announced on Sunday that the 49ers, like the Dallas Cowboys, were expected to have offers lined up for Beckham by the end of this week. Rams are in the game too.
The responses of both Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are consistent when it comes to gifted free agents. They will always look for ways to improve the team. The question is, how much better would Beckham do to the 49ers?
In 12 games (eight in the regular season, four in the play-offs) against the Rams after the first of ACL’s two tears in his left knee, Beckham had 48 receptions for 593 yards and seven touchdowns.
Three things to consider:
Beckham got $ 1.25 million in salary and a bonus for his time with the Ramses, in addition to what he earned in Cleveland before he was fired. According to OverTheCap.com, the 49ers have $ 6.2 million and a shift in under the salary cap.
Money shouldn’t be a problem unless Beckham wants something weird, and at 30 and after two ACL operations in the seasons that follow, it shouldn’t be. More likely, he picks a team he thinks can get him another ring, believing he is more than just a third recipient.
Is Beckham the same explosive acrobatic wide receiver that he has always been? Besides, will she be willing to match like last year with Aries to be part of the winner? Beckham reported on Twitter in July he played the entire “previous half of the season without ACL”.
Does that make him healthier or less healthy after the second surgery?
When Beckham agrees with someone, a physical exam can be his most difficult test.
If Beckham has stepped on board and pulled aside Jauan Jennings, Ray-Ray McCloud and rookie Danny Gray for playtime, so be it. That’s life in the NFL. On a pitch where Beckham would fit in with a crime where Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Elijah Mitchell and George Kittle were queuing to be touched?
If Beckham wants as many receptions as possible he can get, Dallas is arguably the better option.
And how would Beckham, after being seriously injured, take on the blocking responsibilities Shanahan requires from his wide audience? Aiyuk and Jennings are very good at this for a team involved in the race.
It seems unlikely, although many thought the same of trading for McCaffrey. Going all out means taking the occasional risk.
